Job summary
The Shift Leader is responsible for supervising and coordinating all production activities during an assigned shift to ensure that poultry and swine feeds are manufactured safely, efficiently, consistently, and according to approved formulations, quality standards, and production targets. The Shift Leader will coordinate production workers, monitor machinery and production processes, maintain accurate production records, enforce safety and hygiene standards, identify and report equipment or production problems, and ensure proper handover to the incoming shift.

- JOB PURPOSE
The Shift Leader is responsible for supervising and coordinating all production activities during an assigned shift to ensure that poultry and swine feeds are manufactured safely, efficiently, consistently, and according to approved formulations, quality standards, and production targets. The Shift Leader will coordinate production workers, monitor machinery and production processes, maintain accurate production records, enforce safety and hygiene standards, identify and report equipment or production problems, and ensure proper handover to the incoming shift.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Production Management
- Plan and coordinate daily production activities according to the approved production schedule.
- Ensure production targets are achieved within the allocated shift.
- Ensure all feed is produced strictly according to approved formulations and batch instructions.
- Monitor the production process from raw-material preparation, grinding, batching, mixing, pelleting/crumbling where applicable, cooling and packing through to finished-product storage.
- Ensure correct quantities of raw materials are weighed and used in each batch.
- Monitor production output, efficiency, wastage and product losses.
- Identify production delays and take appropriate corrective action.
- Ensure production processes are carried out according to approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure proper sequencing of production to minimize contamination and unnecessary cleaning or changeover time.
- Immediately report major production challenges to the Production Manager or Factory Manager.
B. Supervision of Staff
- Allocate duties to workers at the beginning of each shift.
- Supervise production workers and ensure they perform their assigned responsibilities properly.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, and discipline of shift employees.
- Ensure adequate staffing throughout the shift.
- Train and guide employees on correct production procedures and safe machine operation.
- Address minor disciplinary and performance issues and escalate serious cases to management.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and good communication among shift employees.
- Ensure workers do not leave their workstations without proper authorization or replacement.
- Conduct shift briefings and communicate production priorities and safety requirements.
C. Machinery and Equipment
- Ensure production machinery is operated correctly and safely.
- Monitor the performance of equipment during the shift.
- Identify unusual machine sounds, overheating, vibration, blockages, or other signs of malfunction.
- Report machine breakdowns immediately to the Maintenance Department.
