MULTIMEDIA OFFICER

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters (HQ) in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC is recruiting a Multimedia Officer for its Synergy Unit’s Policy Engagement and Communications Program. The Officer will lead the creation of visual, audio, and digital content to translate complex research findings and policy messages into accessible, engaging products. Supporting Center-wide projects, the role drives institutional communications, knowledge translation, stakeholder engagement, and public visibility. This position requires a creative professional skilled in multimedia production, research communication, digital storytelling, and audience engagement.

Key Responsibilities

● Conceptualize and produce multimedia content in formats including videos, documentaries, animations, podcasts, webcasts, photography, digital stories, online galleries, infographics, slide presentations and interactive products.

● Translate research findings, policy messages and technical information into accessible and compelling visual and audio-visual narratives.

● Develop storyboards, scripts, production plans and creative concepts in collaboration with researchers, policy engagement specialists and communications colleagues.

● Conduct and record interviews with researchers, policymakers, program participants, partners and other stakeholders.

● Capture high-quality photographs, video footage and audio during APHRC activities, field visits, conferences and stakeholder engagements.

● Produce human-interest stories and other multimedia products that demonstrate the relevance and impact of APHRC’s work.

Video, audio and photography

● Manage the complete video and audio production process, including concept development, scripting, filming, recording, editing, post-production, subtitling and distribution.

● Provide professional photography and videography support for institutional and program activities.

● Set up and operate cameras, lighting, sound and related production equipment.

● Coordinate external production companies, photographers, videographers, animators and other multimedia service providers when required.

● Ensure that multimedia productions meet APHRC’s editorial, technical, ethical and safeguarding standards.

● Obtain and manage appropriate consent for photography, video, audio and personal stories.

Graphic design and data visualization

● Design high-quality products for digital and print use, including infographics, reports, policy briefs, factsheets, event materials, social media assets, presentations, banners and exhibition materials.

● Work with researchers and policy engagement teams to present data and evidence through accurate and accessible visualizations.

● Develop creative concepts, templates and visual assets that strengthen consistency across APHRC products.

● Apply sound principles of typography, color, composition, accessibility and information hierarchy.

● Ensure that all visual products comply with APHRC’s brand guidelines and relevant partner requirements.

Digital platforms and events

● Produce and adapt multimedia content for APHRC’s website, social media platforms, newsletters, digital campaigns and other communication channels.

● Support the planning and technical delivery of webinars, livestreams, hybrid meetings, conferences, exhibitions and other institutional events.

● Provide audio-visual support, including presentation management, recording, streaming and post-event editing.

● Optimize content for different platforms, audiences, devices and internet environments.

● Monitor emerging multimedia formats, tools and audience trends and recommend appropriate innovations for APHRC.

Multimedia asset management

● Maintain organized institutional databases and archives for photographs, videos, audio recordings, graphics, consent forms and other digital assets.

● Develop and apply clear systems for naming, classifying, storing, retrieving and backing up multimedia files and consent forms.

● Maintain an inventory of audio-visual equipment and coordinate its appropriate use, storage and maintenance.

● Ensure that multimedia assets are properly licensed, credited and used in accordance with copyright, data protection and consent requirements.
