Position Overview

The University of Rwanda (UR), through the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), School of Medicine and Pharmacy, is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Specialist Neurologist to strengthen specialist clinical care, medical education, research, and academic development within its affiliated teaching hospitals.
The Specialist Neurologist will provide high-quality, evidence-based neurological care to inpatients and outpatients while contributing actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical supervision, research, mentorship, quality improvement, and professional service.
The successful candidate will work closely with clinical and academic teams to strengthen neurological services and contribute to the training of medical students, interns, residents, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist neurological assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients with a wide range of neurological disorders.
  • Conduct specialist outpatient clinics and provide inpatient neurological consultations.
  • Participate in emergency neurological care, including the management of acute stroke, seizures, altered consciousness, and other neurological emergencies.
  • Request, interpret, and appropriately utilize laboratory, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, and other diagnostic investigations.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment and follow-up plans and make appropriate referrals to multidisciplinary services.
  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and other clinical review activities.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely clinical records in accordance with professional standards and hospital policies.
  • Promote patient safety, ethical practice, evidence-based care, and compliance with applicable clinical guidelines and hospital procedures.
  • Teach medical students, interns, residents, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals through bedside teaching, lectures, seminars, case presentations, journal clubs, and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Supervise, assess, and mentor trainees in accordance with programme requirements and provide appropriate academic and career guidance.
  • Contribute to the development and review of curricula, clinical guidelines, teaching materials, examinations, and other academic resources.
  • Conduct and supervise clinical and academic research relevant to neurology and institutional health priorities.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at professional and academic conferences.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and encourage research engagement among residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital committees, quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and on-call services.
  • Contribute to the development and review of departmental policies, protocols, standard operating procedures, and clinical guidelines.
