Role overview

The Physics Teacher will develop schemes of work and lesson plans that align with curriculum objectives. The teacher will facilitate learning by building positive relationships with pupils and effectively organizing classroom resources and the learning environment.

The teacher will develop and foster the appropriate academic skills and social abilities required for the optimum development of children according to their ages, abilities and aptitudes. The role also involves assessing and recording pupils’ progress and preparing them for examinations.

The teacher will connect pupils’ current knowledge with earlier learning, develop strategies to encourage further progress, and challenge and inspire pupils to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Key responsibilities

Teaching and curriculum delivery

The teacher will:

• Teach all areas of the secondary physics curriculum.

• Plan, prepare and present lessons that address the needs of pupils across the full ability range.

• Prepare and deliver lessons to classes of different ages and abilities.

• Motivate pupils through enthusiastic and imaginative presentations.

• Research new subject areas, maintain up-to-date subject knowledge, and devise and write new curriculum materials.

• Select and use a range of learning resources and equipment, including podcasts and interactive whiteboards.

• Prepare pupils for qualifications and external examinations.

• Keep up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum.

• Coordinate activities and resources within a specific area of the curriculum and support colleagues in delivering the specialist area.

• Work with others to plan and coordinate teaching activities.

Assessment and pupil development

• Take responsibility for the progress of every pupil in the assigned class.

• Prepare and mark work to support positive pupil development.

• Mark pupils’ work, provide appropriate feedback, and maintain records of their progress and development.

• Meet the school’s requirements for assessing and recording pupils’ development.

• Provide parents and carers with feedback on pupils’ progress during parents’ evenings and other meetings.

Classroom management and pupil support

• Organize the classroom and learning resources and create displays that encourage a positive learning environment.

• Maintain discipline.

• Manage pupil behaviour in the classroom and elsewhere on school premises.

• Apply appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour.

• Undertake pastoral duties, including serving as a form tutor where required.

• Support pupils individually when they experience academic or personal difficulties.

School activities and community engagement

• Organize and participate in school events, outings and activities that may take place during evenings or weekends.

• Work with parents to maximize their involvement in the school and in developing resources for the school.

• Meet with other professionals, such as education welfare officers and educational psychologists, when required.

Collaboration and professional development

• Liaise with colleagues and work flexibly.

• Supervise and support teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.

• Participate in departmental meetings, parents’ evenings and whole-school training events.

• Undergo regular lesson observations.

• Participate in regular in-service training as part of continuing professional development.

Experience requirements

Candidates should have:
